Singing in the rain just got better

London - Most garden speaker systems come with at least one small but ultimately tragic flaw, which results in their joining the ranks of over-ambitious outdoor tools in the depths of your shed.

My albatross is that mine works via wi-fi, meaning I have to hold it aloft like a druid raising up a sacrifice to reconnect it to the network every few minutes.

In most cases, though, the flaw is more prosaic – many normal speakers explode (or simply fizzle out) in the presence of rain. You end up buying them with the intention of taking them back in the house every time it rains. This, of course, is futile. Basically, you might as well blast them with the hose the day you buy them to save yourself the suspense.

Bayan’s Soundscene speakers won’t survive a Biblical flood, but they will, however, easily survive a few showers in the inevitable event that you leave them outdoors. The robust casing will, crucially, withstand a light mauling from animals or children.

The Soundscenes are less ambitious than many garden speaker systems – so they work via Bluetooth direct from your smartphone rather than connecting via wi-fi to your home network.

You won’t be able to tune in to a library of MP3 tracks on your PC. But, unlike me, you also won’t be endlessly triangulating your speakers to pick up the faint whispers of an overworked router lurking somewhere in the back of your home.

The Soundscenes are an expandable family of speakers. You can pair up to seven of them if you’re aiming for the sort of garden party that will make your neighbours swear vengeance on your family.

As with all Bluetooth speakers, pairing up requires a simple menu-flick on either Android or iPhone, allowing you to play any music you have stored on the device, plus internet radio and Spotify. They pair without any fuss. You simply press “Link” and the job is done. The speakers have NFC built in: a hi-tech chip that allows you to pair new devices simply by plonking them on top.

The batteries will last nine hours, and are portable enough for a trip to the park, knowing your music can weather whatever nature throws at you.
