Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14

Platform: PS3, Xbox 360

Developer: EA

Rating out of five: ***

Another year, another entry into the Tiger Woods golf franchise as EA once more prep the virtual greens.

This time Tiger vies for cover space not only with current tour rival Rory McIlroy, but with the legendary Seve Ballesteros - a nod to this entry's historical slant.

Appropriately for a game with one foot in a bygone era, there's little attempt to push the gameplay on beyond superficial modifications to putting, and how swerve is applied to shots.

So it is that the main innovation comes from the new “Legends of the Majors” mode which follows golfing history through from Tom Morris's exploits at the 1873 Open to present day; with the successes of the likes of Seve, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer celebrated en route.

EA has pulled out all the stops to make each classic tournament authentic, even going so far as to present older matches in sepia and limiting your selection of clubs to those available at the time.

Otherwise everything else - career mode (with added LPGA Tour), online options and course choices - is as you'd expect; in a golf game that's wholly competent but too similar to recent entries to be truly essential. - The Independent
