London - The last typewriter to be made in Britain was finished on Tuesday – bringing to an end the 130-year history of the machine in the country.
Manufacturer Brother – which has made 5.9 million typewriters since its factory in Wrexham opened in 1985 – is donating the final one to London’s Science Museum.
The firm’s UK boss, Phil Jones, admitted that the typewriter still held “a special place in the hearts” of the public but said that computer technology meant demand in Britain had fallen to the point where it was no longer financially viable to continue production.
Brother will continue to use the Wrexham factory to run a recycling scheme for printer cartridges as well as to make other office technology. - Daily Mail
