Nepal is preparing to launch a website allowing users to make a virtual tour of the country's popular tourist spots, including the world's highest mountain, officials said.

The site will contain computer-generated graphics of monuments and places of interest, allowing the web visitor to guide the viewpoint through a virtual tour, the Nepal Tourism Board said.

The “Journey to Everest” programme was developed by 3rd Planet, based in Singapore.

“We be launching towards end 2011,” 3rd Planet chief Terence Mak said.

The interactive site will also allow the user to call up information about a location's history, tourist facilities or weather.

“3rd Planet has an amazing technology that enables us to showcase our country in a totally new dimension,” said Prachanda Man Shrestha, chief executive of the Nepal Tourism Board. - Sapa-dpa
