Johannesburg - A deceased kwaito star has topped May's list of fastest rising internet searches in South Africa, outranking the controversial painting of President Jacob Zuma, Google said on Friday.

Kwaito star Brown Dash died two weeks after his performance at the South African Music Awards.

He beat the search term “Zuma painting” to reach first place.

The president's painting did, however, muster more interest than Big Brother Africa, which took third position.

City Press, Diablo 3, and Jacob Zuma took the next three spots.

Brown Dash also outranked Zuma-related search terms, including “spear”, in May's image searches.

“The Spear” made numerous appearances on the list of top “news” searches for the last 30 days. It secured spots five, six, seven, and eight.

However, Brown Dash once again beat the painting, coming in third place.
