Cape Town - Selfies for South Africa – because it’s not vain if it’s for national pride.
The Department of Arts and Culture has called on South Africans to whip out their cellphones and their patriotic pouts in an effort to drum up social media excitement for Freedom Day on April 27.
Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile wants people to don “anything that makes them feel proudly South African”, and click away. The selfies must be uploaded on to Facebook, Twitter or any social media and tagged using #FreedomFridaySelfie or #20YOFselfie.
“With less than two weeks to go before April 27, as part of the celebration, let us wear and show off our pride in being South African,” Mashatile said.
The support for Freedom Fridays doesn’t only exist online.
People are encouraged to spend the day wearing the colours of the national flag, or gear supporting a national sports team, or anything proudly South African.
