London – Millions of Google email users could face embarrassment after a bug caused messages to be sent to the wrong people.

Users have complained that when they begin typing in a name, Gmail automatically fills in another person’s details from their address book – rather than suggesting a list of frequent contacts as normal.

The problem, which started about a week ago, means personal messages could go to people the sender hardly knows, with serious consequences if medical or financial details fall into the wrong hands.

Google last night said it was investigating how it could fix the issue.
