London – Hackers tried to serve up a damaging computer virus to families visiting Jamie Oliver’s website.

They installed malicious software that could infect the computers of customers who accessed the celebrity chef’s website, jamieoliver.com.

The ‘Dorkbot’ programme can clog up a computer’s memory and enable hackers to hijack the victim’s internet browser and perform false internet searches.

These help hackers earn money by directing users to so-called ‘affiliate’ websites, whose owners are paid for every click.

Around 10 million people visit Oliver’s website each month to find recipes or to book a table at one of his restaurants.

Managers at jamieoliver.com said that only 10 people had got in touch about hacking.

‘We found a low level malware problem and dealt with it quickly. The site is now safe to use,’ a spokesman said.
