One in five UK consumers have had personal details stolen and their bank accounts used as a result of a cyber security breach, according to adviser Deloitte.

Deloitte’s report follows a high-profile case last month when telecoms firm TalkTalk admitted nearly 157,000 of its customers’ personal details were accessed, and more than 15,600 bank account numbers and sort codes stolen in hacking incidents.

Deloitte’s survey of 1,500 consumers also found three-quarters of people said they would reconsider using a company if it failed to keep their data safe.

Simon Borwick, director in the cyber risk services team at Deloitte, said: ‘Many organisations are struggling to prepare themselves to deal with the wide range of different cyber attacks. Cyber security has moved beyond simply being an IT issue; it is now a business-wide risk which requires immediate attention at the highest level.’ – Daily Mail
