London - You’re on the main road. You’re feeling a little disconcerted that the duffel coat you bought last winter is fraying at the edges and missing a button.

Suddenly - gasp! - a friend you haven’t seen for years walks past in a coat so beautiful you shy away from saying hello, in case she judges you and your coat.

At the same time, you curse knowing you’ve missed your opportunity to find out where The Coat Of Dreams is from. Well, now, eBay has come up with technology to solve this conundrum.

Its chief executive John Donahoe has just announced plans to launch product recognition software for your mobile phone.

This means you’ll be able to take a snap of a piece of clothing and an app will match it up with the same or similar items on eBay.com, which you can then put a bid in for.

This could open up a whole world of shopping opportunities. School runs, dog walks and the commute to work are no longer menial activities, but transformed into moments of potential fashion therapy.

“Pri-mani” liars (that’s people who say they’re wearing Armani when really it’s from Primark) will be exposed and the world will be a better place.

The software should be out by Christmas. Either way, we wait with bated breath. - Daily Mail
