Tehran - Iran's mobile phone companies are denying tampering with text messages that include words such as “currency” and “dollar,” after users complained that messages including those words are not being delivered.
The denials appearing on Tuesday in the pro-reform Shargh daily reflect speculation by some Iranians that the government is trying further stem the depreciation of the Iranian rial by blocking messages they fear could influence its value.
The rial, which has fallen by about 40 percent against the dollar since December 2010, has come under more pressure after the United States announced new sanctions targeting Iran's central bank. - Sapa-AP
