Death of the landline

London - The landline telephone is all but dead, a study suggested on Tuesday.

It found 28 percent of people can not even recall their home number, while more than a third ignore their landline when it rings, usually expecting a nuisance or sales call. One in ten doesn’t even keep it plugged in, the poll by Relish broadband found.

For many, it is only the need for an internet connection that persuades them to maintain a landline, as internet providers often make line rental a requirement. Making calls was only fifth on the list of reasons for having one.

The lack of caller ID is what prevents one in four from picking up, whilst a lazy fifth confessed that they can’t be bothered to reach for the home phone.

And it seems we won’t be sorry for the landline to go – as almost four in ten agreed they don’t want theirs anymore, with the average person predicting home phones to be around for only three more years. - Daily Mail
