London - The average adult will this year spend more time looking at their phones, tablets and computers than watching television, it has been predicted.

By the end of 2013, people will use some type of internet-connected device for four hours and 40 minutes a day – a rise of one hour and 54 minutes from 2010.

In contrast, adults will watch TV for four hours and 31 minutes a day, up just five minutes from 2010, but down seven minutes from 2012.

Marketing company eMarketer said the average adult in the US will this year spend two hours and 21 minutes a day using smartphones or tablets, excluding phone calls. This is up by 46 minutes from 2012 and a massive one hour and 57 minutes increase on 2010.

It is estimated that the average person will use a smartphone for one hour and seven minutes a day, while spending one hour and three minutes on a tablet. They will also spend two hours and 19 minutes on a laptop or desktop computer, a fall of eight minutes on 2012 figures.

The figures include multi-taskers who surf the internet, check social networks and play games while watching television.

The survey showed that the amount of time people use their phone for non-voice activities has more than quadrupled from 24 minutes a day in 2010. The increase is tied to the explosion in the number of apps available.

Last week, communications watchdog Ofcom revealed that tablet ownership in the UK had risen from 11 percent of households to 24 percent over the last year.- Daily Mail
