Telkom said on Tuesday it had no involvement with a possible appeal on an Altech ruling permitting VANS to build their own telecommunications networks.

"Telkom... would like to refute all claims indicating any involvement, of influence or otherwise, with regards to a possible appeal by any party relating to the Altech ruling."

Last Friday, Communications Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri announced that she would appeal a high court ruling permitting value-added network services to build their own telecommunications networks.

On Tuesday, Telkom said it had no knowledge of information provided to the communications department or state attorney for grounds to appeal the judgement,

The company said it had scrutinised the judgement only for purposes of assessing the possible risk and impact on its own business.

Last month, the Transvaal Division of the high court ruled in favour of an urgent application brought by Altech Autopage Cellular on the question of whether VANS should be allowed to build their own networks.

Altech Cellular's court action followed Matsepe-Casaburri's refusal to grant VANS permission to do so. - Sapa
