Ajax, Pirates clash rescheduled

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) fixture between Ajax Cape Town and Orlando Pirates, postponed controversially two hours before kickoff last week, has been rescheduled, the PSL announced on Tuesday.

"The match has been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 3," PSL chief executive Trevor Phillips said in a statement.

Premiership leaders Pirates and Ajax were supposed to play last Thursday at Cape Town's Newlands Stadium, but the match could not take place after nine Pirates players complained of a stomach bug. They were rushed to hospital amid fears of food poisoning.

The postponement of the fixture raised the ire of Ajax, whose supporters - and those of Pirates - had already purchased tickets to the clash, only to learn later that the match had been set aside.

Phillips added that he "fully endorsed" a decision taken by the match commissioner not to let the match go ahead. Supporters who had already purchased the tickets for the match are urged to hold on to them as they will still be valid for the May 3 clash.

In their response, Ajax said through coach Gordon Igesund that they accepted the decision, allaying earlier fears that the Urban Warriors would seek to drag the matter into the boardroom.

"We've got to follow the instructions from the PSL," Igesund said, although he had reservations.

"Personally, I don't think this is a good decision. What happens next when I've got nine players down with flu or injury?"

"Does this mean I can request a postponement? Anyway, I'm not one to win matches in the boardroom and will accept the decision."
