Johannesburg - Senegalese former head of IAAF, Lamine Diack, is being investigated by French authorities for his alleged involvement for receiving payments to cover-up Russian doping cases according to reports on Wednesday.

Diack left his position as president of the IAAF in August as Sebastian Coe took over at the helm. Diack had been president for 16 years when he left his post.

Habib Cisse, advisor to Diack, is also being investigated.

In a statement from French financial prosecutors, Diack’s and Cisse’s involvement in a doping cover-up was alleged.

“Diack is suspected of receiving money in exchange for deferring sanctions for several Russian athletes who were found guilty of doping in 2011, ahead of the Olympic Games.

“Diack and Cisse were arrested on Sunday and released on Tuesday, after being interrogated by police officers and judges.

“They were presented to a judge on Tuesday who informed them that they had been put under a formal investigation. The investigation also continues into whether other persons were involved in suspected corruption.”
