Cape Town – Cricket South Africa (CSA) said it was in excellent form, despite the controversy of player selection in the 2015 Cricket World Cup (CWC) semifinal on March 24.

“We can be proud in saying we are in excellent shape,” said CSA Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat.

CSA, the sport’s authority in the country, briefed Parliament’s sport and recreation portfolio committee on matters of transformation, financial performance, governance, and development programmes.

In his presentation to the committee, Lorgat touched briefly on the issue of a change to the CWC 2015 Proteas semifinal team against New Zealand which saw Vernon Philander added as an additional player of colour.

“I don’t want to say too much on this. It is a matter we have dealt with,” said Lorgat. He said he would be the first to admit the CWC selection issue was a “bugbear” and called it “mischievous”.

“As you will know, we investigated the matter with independent directors and an extensive media statement was released,” said Lorgat.

He added that the media coverage around CSA was generally positive although the reports around the CWC selection matter “caused regrettable harm”. – ANA
