Johannesburg – Cricket SA (CSA) staff will receive no bonuses for hosting the Champions League Twenty20 tournament (CLT20), the organisers said on Wednesday.
Tournament director Naasei Appiah said there would be no kickbacks for CSA.
“We don't receive bonuses for running events.”
Bonuses paid to CSA staff after the 2009 Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament created far-reaching repercussions in South African cricket.
This was after R4.7 million was shared between the federation's employees without being cleared by the board or the remuneration committee.
Embattled CSA chief executive Gerald Majola was set to face a disciplinary hearing in Johannesburg starting on Wednesday for his role in the scandal, though the hearing was expected to be delayed.
The CLT20, a spinoff of the IPL, begins next week with six teams playing qualifying matches for two spots in the main tournament, which kicks off on October 13.
The eight competing teams, to be joined by the two qualifiers, include the Highveld Lions, the Titans, the Sydney Sixers (Australia), Perth Scorchers (Australia), Kolkata Knight Riders (India), Chennai Super Kings (India), Delhi Daredevils (India) and the Mumbai Indians (India).
Acting CSA chief executive Jacques Faul welcomed the chance for South Africa to host the tournament for a second time. It was first held in the country in 2010.
“It provides a platform for players to perform on an international level,” said Faul.
IPL chief executive Sundar Raman believed hosting the tournament for the second time in South Africa was the correct decision.
“It's a great country to host big tournaments,” Raman said.
“It's cricket-loving and sport-loving public out there, and the infrastructure is there.
“If you look at interest across domestic T20s there is a significant interest. Look at the opportunity it has provided.
“You have people who have come into the limelight because of these championships, and that to me is very heartening.” – Sapa
