Pretoria – Following a poor run of form against India, Hashim Amla says he is keeping things simple in his preparations for South Africa's three-Test series against Australia starting in Centurion on Wednesday.
Amla, who scored just 43 runs in the two recent Tests against India, was out twice not offering a shot, and had a top score of 36.
The Proteas batsman, however, said no radical change would be necessary.
“I will try not to get out freakishly again. There's not much you can do about certain things,” Amla said at SuperSport Park on Monday.
“I always try and keep things as simple as possible. It's worked over the last few years, and I'll just try and apply myself. Sometimes the game of cricket is a combination of many things to succeed.”
The Proteas have not beaten Australia in South Africa since re-admission, and Amla said the statistic would be enough to get the dressing room fired up.
“Over the last few series we've played Australia, we've had success. It would be nice to translate that success into a home series.
“The last time they were here it was a very good series. We hope we can get a victory at home for our supporters.
“Playing any international match is exciting and playing against Australia is just as exciting.”
The Aussies had been ruthless against England in their 5-0 Ashes victory in Australia, and Amla said the Proteas knew what to expect from their opponents.
“Surprise factor is valuable for any team but, I don't think in this series there will be many surprise factors.
“Both teams know each other well.
“We've played Australia a lot over the last few years, with the same bowling attack as well. I don't think it will be different how we approach this series.”
The departure of Jacques Kallis from the Test arena had given the team a new feel, Amla said.
“It's given the team a different dynamic, and a different approach.
“The captain and the coach decide on how they want to take the team forward.
“We all knew Jacques would have to retire at some stage and there was a contingency plan for that.”
Faf du Plessis had already been earmarked to slot into the number four batting position left open by Kallis, and Amla said he had the potential and ability to fill the role.
“Ever since Faf's come into the team - especially in the Test arena -he's been excellent for us in exceptional circumstances.
“I don't think there's too much pressure on him. We just hope he slots in and does his thing. We all believe - and he's proven - that he's a world-class performer in Tests.” – Sapa
