Durban – No further play was possible after after bad light stopped play shortly after tea on the first day of the second Test between South Africa and India at Kingsmead on Thursday.
India were 181 for one when the umpires took the players off amid the gloomy conditions.
Murali Vijay, 91 not out, and Cheteshwar Pujara on 58, had put on 140 runs for the second wicket at the interruption of play.
Morne Morkel provided the only wicket, which came in the first session of the match. Opener Shikhar Dhawan (29) was forced into playing a full delivery, but the ball took the edge and he was caught at third slip by Alviro Petersen.
Dale Steyn, who recently relinquished his position at the top of the ICC Test bowling rankings to team-mate Vernon Philander, bowled 16 overs without success, conceding 49 runs in this innings. He has gone 67 overs without a wicket after dismissing Dhawan in the first innings of the Johannesburg Test last week.
Vijay and Pujara brought up their 100-run partnership off 177
balls during the afternoon session as the Indians forged ahead.
Earlier, both sides came into the game looking to clinch the series as the first of the two-Test series was drawn.
The Boxing Day Test would be the last for Jacques Kallis as he announced his retirement from the longest format of the game on Wednesday. Kallis led the team on to the field and was greeted by large cheers from the crowd.
Kallis will end his career at the ground where he made his debut for South Africa in 1995 against England. Playing in his 166th match, the all-rounder has scored 13174 runs, averaging 55.12, including 44 centuries and 58 half-centuries. With the ball, Kallis has taken 292 wickets at an average of 32.6. He has also taken 199
catches.
