Johannesburg – Fast bowler Morne Morkel left the field with a right ankle sprain early in India's second innings to add to South Africa's struggles in the first Test on Friday.

Morkel went over awkwardly on the ankle while fielding near the boundary just before lunch and didn't come out for the second session to go to the hospital for a scan, robbing the top-ranked South Africans of a front-line quick as they try to fight their way back into the match.

Team spokesperson Lerato Malekutu said Morkel would have the scan to determine the “severity” of the injury.

India was building a sizeable lead at the Wanderers on the third day with South Africa relying on Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander to do the bulk of the seam bowling without Morkel, who took 3-34 in the first innings. – Sapa-AP
