Cape Town – Robin Peterson helped South Africa wipe out most of their deficit and trail by just 12 runs when they were bowled out for 326 on day three of the second Test against Pakistan at Newlands, in Cape Town, on Saturday.

Peterson shared an eighth-wicket stand with Vernon Philander (22) worth 67 runs and was eventually caught by Umar Gul at long-on, off a top edge to Mohammad Hafeez.

He took 56 balls to bring up his second Test half-century and first one in a decade.

Peterson's 84 runs was his highest Test score with his previous best being 61 against Bangladesh in 2002/03.

Debutante Mohammad Irfan took three wickets, while off-spinner Saeed Ajmal was the star of the show with his six for 96. – Sapa
