London – England were set a target of 346 to win the third and final Test after bowling South Africa out for 351 in their second innings on the fourth day at Lord's on Sunday.
The most England have ever made in the fourth innings to win a Test is the 332 for seven they posted against Australia at Melbourne back in 1928/29.
And the equivalent ground record at Lord's is the 344 for one made by the West Indies against England in 1984.
JP Duminy was 26 not out after Hashim Amla had made 124.
Fast bowler Steven Finn took four for 74 to follow his four first innings wickets for a match haul of eight for 149 on his Middlesex home ground.
South Africa lead the three-match series 1-0 and only need to avoid defeat to replace England as the world's top-ranked Test side. – AFP
