Durban - A Proteas cricketer claimed his arrest by the police on Friday night for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol only happened because he was a well known personality.

Aaron Phangiso, 31, who recently returned from the Cricket World Cup in New Zealand, was initially suspected of driving a stolen vehicle, but the police later subjected the spinner to a blood test, believing that he may have consumed alcohol. He was warned and released. He is due to appear in court on August 14.

“It’s nothing but a show to the media and public that they (the police) are doing the job by arresting my client, who is a celebrity,” said his advocate Peter Roy Masango.

Cricket South Africa spokesman Altaaf Kazi said they are aware of the allegations.

Gauteng police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini confirmed the arrest.
