Sydney - Fast bowler Sean Abbott, who bowled the bouncer that resulted in the death of batsman Phil Hughes, has been named Australia's young cricketer of the year.

The 22-year-old Abbott, who made his one-day and Twenty20 debuts for Australia in October, received the award, named for Sir Don Bradman, at a ceremony Tuesday. Phil Hughes won the Bradman award in 2009.

Abbott was bowling for New South Wales in a Sheffield Shield match against South Australia on Nov. 25 when his short-pitched delivery struck Hughes on the neck. Hughes lost consciousness and died two days later in hospital.

Steve Smith, who has been Australia's captain in the absence of Michael Clarke, won the Allan Border Medal as the overall player of the year and was named test and one-day international player of the year.
