Brisbane - Australia cricket captain Michael Clarke says he “most definitely” would play under Steve Smith if Cricket Australia rules Smith should become his permanent replacement.

Smith replaced Clarke during his slow rehabilitation from hamstring surgery and his form and leadership have led to speculation his appointment might become permanent.

Clarke said he knew what Smith was going through because “I sat in his shoes” when he succeeded Ricky Ponting as captain.

“It's certainly not personal between Smithy and I,” he said. “The people that sit above both him and I will make their decisions. Whatever they feel are the best 11 players, they will pick that 11. Whoever they feel is the best captain for the team then they'll pick that.”
