Southhampton – India were bowled out for 330 in reply to England’s first innings 569 for seven declared, a deficit of 239 runs, on the fourth day of the third Test at Southampton on Wednesday.
Although England captain Alastair Cook could have enforced the follow-on, he decided to give his bowlers a breather on another hot day at the Ageas Bowl and decided to bat again instead.
England paceman James Anderson marked his 32nd birthday by polishing off India, who resumed on 323 for eight, with two wickets for one run in six balls to finish with figures of five for 53 in 26.1 overs Ä his 16th five-wicket haul in Tests.
Stuart Broad took three for 66 in 25 overs as he and Anderson became only the third pace pair after Pakistan’s Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram and West Indies’ Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh to have 500 Test wickets between them.
Ajinkya Rahane (54) and India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (50) were the only batsman to make half-centuries in the innings.
Anderson had Dhoni out for his overnight 50, when he top-edged an intended pull off a short ball and gave wicketkeeper Jos Buttler a simple catch.
The same combination accounted for Mohammed Shami (five), leaving debutant Pankaj Singh one not out.
