Rivarolo Canavese, Italy - Italian Marco Canola won the 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia on Friday after he and two breakaway companions took the peloton by surprise.

Canola outsprinted Colombian Jackson Rodriguez and Frenchman Agelo Tulik, who finished second and third, with France's Nacer Bouhanni taking the sprint of the peloton 11 seconds behind to strengthen his lead in the points classification.

Sprint specialist Bouhanni, however, was the big favourite going into the stage but his FDJ.fr and other sprinters outfit failed to organise themselves to rein in the three fugitives.

Colombian Rigoberto Uran retained the overall leader's pink jersey after spending 157 kilometres from Fossano safe in the main bunch.

Uran still leads Australian Cadel Evans by 37 seconds.

Saturday's 14th stage takes the peloton over 164km in the mountains with two first-category climbs to tackle.
