Johannesburg - Daryl Impey was crowned South African Road Cycling national champion for the fourth time after he successfully defended his individual time trial title in Mbombela on Thursday.

Over four laps of the technical 10.68 km course, Impey came out tops in 53 minutes, 23 seconds (53:23).

Reinardt Janse van Rensburg came in second, and Louis Meintjes rounded off the podium.

Janse van Rensburg, who took the title in 2012, said he was happy finishing second, admitting that Impey was just in a class of his own.

“Daryl was just too strong and way better out there today,” Janse van Rensburg said.

“It was very hard and I'm satisfied with second. The course had a lot of ups and downs and it was very technical, so it was very hard to find my rhythm.”

Ashleigh Moolman Pasio also defended her national title on the three-lap 32.04km women's course, posting a time of 46:30. The win handed Moolman Pasio her third consecutive time trial title.

Cherise Stander and Heidi Dalton finished second and third.
