Johannesburg – Athletics South Africa (ASA) have issued a statement confirming 100 metre sprinter Simon Magakwe has been banned until January 28, 2017.

Simon Magakwe, 28, an athlete of Athletics North West North has been charged with an anti-doping rule violation under IAAF Rule 32.2 (c) (Refusal/failure to submit to doping control), following an unsuccessful out-of-competition test conducted under the authority of the IAAF on December 22, 2014.

“In accordance with IAAF Rules, his case been referred by the IAAF to the Disciplinary Panel of ASA for adjudication. On January 29, 2015, a Disciplinary Panel of ASA found him guilty of an anti-doping rule violation and imposed a two-year sanction upon him,” read the statement.

Magakwe had the chance to appeal to the Court of Arbitration of Sports, but according to the IAAF no successful appeal was filed in time.

ASA, did however, confirm all Magakwe’s times achieved before January 29 when the ban came into effect will stand. It means Magakwe’s achievements as the national record holder in the 100m and the first South African to run under 10 seconds in the event will stand. Magakwe ran 9.98 in Pretoria in April last year. – ANA
