Johannesburg - Even with Friday’s gloomy weather in Durban, the local 2022 Commonwealth Games bid committee still put on a great display for Commonwealth Games Federation officials.

During a walkabout with city officials at one of the proposed playing venues for the Games - Durban Collegians Bowling Club - 26 federation members from Europe and Oceania said they were very pleased with the progress.

Paul Bush, the chairman of the Scotland federation, said all the facilities appeared to be in good condition.

As previous host of the games, Bush conceded that every bid has its challenges. “But the trick is to start working as soon as you get awarded the bid,” he advised.

The city, said Bush, should not only concentrate on 2022, but work towards building a legacy after the games.

“People must still remember that Durban hosted the games years after 2022.”

The delegates, who will return to their respective countries tomorrow, will continue with their site visits today when they inspect the Cascades Mountain Bike Park in Pietermaritzburg.

Another batch of federation members, from the Caribbean and Americas, will arrive in Durban on August 5 for a final site inspection before the host city is announced in September.
