Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana assistant coach Owen da Gama hopes the death of national soccer captain Senzo Meyiwa will bring about change with the formation of some kind of foundation in his name.
“It is a tragic incident but I believe there will be something made to respect the legacy,” Da Gama said at a joint memorial service on Thursday for three of SA's sporting heroes who died over the past week.
“Maybe a foundation or something will be formed and ensure the name Senzo Meyiwa will create a big change in a lot of people's lives and protect a lot of people.”
Meyiwa was shot dead on Sunday evening in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, while visiting his singer girlfriend Kelly Khumalo. It is alleged two men entered the house demanding cellphones and shot him before fleeing.
Former world champion 800m sensation Mbulaeni Mulaudzi was killed in a car accident in Mpumalanga on Friday.
He was on his way to Johannesburg when he lost control of his car.
Welter Weight boxer Phindile Mwelase died on Saturday after being in coma for two weeks following a bout.
By the scheduled noon start the service was still not underway with supporters and dignitaries still taking their seats.
Among the dignitaries assembled at the Standard Bank Arena were SA Football Association president Danny Jordaan, Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba, and South African hammerthrow legend Chris Harmse.
According to the programme former Bafana Bafana captain Ithumeleng Khune and Pirates player Lucky Lekgwathi would pay tribute to Meyiwa.
Olympic long jump silver medalist Khotso Mokoena and 800m silver medallist Hezekiel Sepeng would speak on Mulaudzi.
