A few months ago he could not get into the Lions starting XV. In fact, it got so bad he was dropped from the matchday squad. Now, Marnitz Boshoff can’t put a foot wrong.
The Lions flyhalf has again made the Currie Cup No10 jersey his own and after three matches in the competition he’s showing the kind of form that made him a Lions hero and Springbok in June last year. He’s slotted every kick at goal – 20 in total – and played a big role in his team going unbeaten so far.
It’s been a quite remarkable turnaround for the man who had to sit and watch as Elton Jantjies starred in Super Rugby.
“The big thing is I’m getting game-time again. In Super Rugby I was in and out and then Elton was the first choice. Playing well and kicking well comes from playing each and every week; your confidence grows and grows,” says Boshoff.
“I’m just thankful for the opportunity to be out on the field again. Yes, it was frustrating sitting on the sidelines in Super Rugby, but that’s part of the game and sport; one day you’re up the next you’re down. It was something of a big learning experience for me ... to grow mentally.”
He says he hasn’t changed anything in his kicking style – the standout feature of his game, but something that deserted him in last year’s Currie Cup final against Western Province and also at times in Super Rugby, when he did play. “Having the responsibility to kick at goal week-in and week-out is crucial for anyone tasked with the job and I enjoy that responsibility; it makes me comfortable.
“You can talk to whoever you want and look for answers as to why things go wrong sometimes, but at the end of the day it’s up to the individual to find the answers.
“Obviously if you’re struggling with your kicks your whole game is influenced by it, but when you’re on song, as I’ve been, the whole game comes together. I’m really happy where I am right now with regards to my form.”
With wins against the EP Kings, Pumas and Sharks in the bank, the Lions are one of the form teams in the competition, but they face a tricky away trip to Nelspruit on Friday for the return match against the Pumas. Boshoff says it’s going to be another tough task for his men.
“We’ve played well at times this season but the most pleasing thing is some of the youngsters have really stood up. We’ve lost quite a few players since Super Rugby and there was some pressure on the guys coming in but they’ve all done well.
“We’re very happy with the 15 points earned, but the Pumas won’t be easy. They’re always tough to beat at home and playing in the Mbombela Stadium is always difficult.”
The Lions will be without No8 Ruaan Lerm, who’s picked up an ankle injury and will be out of action for at least four weeks, while Jaco Kriel is said to be recovering well from concussion.
