Durban - New Sharks centre Waylon Murray is delighted to have returned to his former club after signing a 12 month contract, four years after his initial departure.

“It's wonderful to be back here again,” Murray said in Durban on Tuesday.

“It feels right to be here and it really feels like home because I know so many people here. It's been an incredibly easy fit.”

Murray was back at the union where he made his debut as a 19-year-old back in 2005, having since spent time with the Golden Lions, the Southern Kings and the Blue Bulls.

He returned to the Durban side on trial, during the Super Rugby pre-season, where he impressed the coaching staff and was offered a year-long deal.

“I was thinking about going overseas, but when I got back here - seeing the guys and talking to Sean Everitt - it got me excited again just to be back home and to give it another try,” he said.

“Coming back into this environment has been effortless.”

Murray, 28, had been injury-plagued for a large part of his career, but believed he was now in peak shape.

“I've worked really hard after all my injuries and made sure, over these last two years, I'm in the best shape of my life,” he said.

“Playing with such a great squad has been excellent. I just want to contribute. Every team wants to win trophies, so hopefully I can be part of that and help take the team to higher glories.”

The Sharks play two practice games on Thursday against local club sides College Rovers and Durban Collegians, before heading overseas to face French giants Toulon in a friendly match next week.

“I think we just want to build some momentum, which will be key for us going into the season,” Murray said.

“We can't wait to start playing. The boys have worked hard and are looking forward to the run-out on Thursday and then next week against Toulon.”

The Sharks will announce their captain for the new season on Friday, when they will also confirm their Super Rugby squad for the year.
