Scrum-half Fourie Du Preez became the 56th player to lead the Springboks when he replaced injured Jean de Villiers and Victor Matfield as captain for the match against Scotland on Saturday.

Du Preez beat the likes of Schalk Burger, Duane Vermeulen and Francois Louw to the post when De Villiers retired from international rugby after leading his side to defeat against Japan and then suffering a second broken jaw in six weeks against Samoa last Saturday and Matfield was ruled out because of a hamstring strain.

Tim Whitfield, Independent Media’s Sport Editor, tells us why choosing Du Preez to be captain is a good call from Bok coach Heyneke Meyer.
