Cape Town - Ian Schwartz, Springbok Team Manager, on Monday announced that centre Frans Steyn has been granted compassionate leave following the death of his brother Willem Steyn on Monday morning.

Steyn has been released from the Springbok squad which has assembled in Durban for Saturday’s Rugby Championship clash against Argentina. He is presently recovering from a chest injury and was not in the running for a place in Saturday’s match-day squad.

“Frans informed me straight after our morning session on Monday and as soon as he heard the sad and tragic news that his brother had passed away,” said Schwartz.

“We will not take any decisions on his immediate involvement with the squad. His personal situation is now the most important and we will support him and his family wherever we can in this very difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with Frans and his entire family in this time of mourning.”

It has been reported that Steyn’s brother, affectionately known as Wimpie, committed suicide at the family farm near Bethlehem, on Monday.
