Former Bok coach Nick Mallett has warned the Springboks not to be over-confident against England, ahead of their tour to South Africa next month.

Mallett pointed out England's improvement under new coach Stuart Lancaster to reporters at a SuperSport function in Johannesburg on Wednesday and said the Boks should heed the danger signs.

Once England got to grips with what Lancaster wanted from them in the Six Nations tournament, Mallet said they finished strongly, thrashing Ireland and beating France in Paris.

“He’s opted for a younger squad because the older players had let them down,” he said.

“Guys like Owen Farrell and Danny Care represent the best of them, while Manu Tuilagi is very powerful, unlike anyone England has produced.

“Their front row is very good, having dominated Ireland and even Italy, who are traditionally very strong in this area.”

England arrive in South Africa on Thursday for a five-match tour, which includes three Tests and Mallett felt players like Dan Cole, Dylan Hartley and Alex Corbisiero could cause problems for the Boks.

“Their lineout, scrum and kicking game is impressive and Chris Robshaw, the captain, has instilled a feel-good factor and will be up for it after winning the league with Leicester this past weekend.”

Mallett expected the first Test in Durban to be the hardest for SA after England will have enjoyed a longer break.

“Back here, our Super Rugby sides will be going at it hammer and tongs this weekend,” he said.

“A lot of the England game will have to be played purely on passion and heart – there just isn’t enough time for detailed game plans,” Mallett said.

“It will very much come down to forward dominance. If the Boks can do that, it will allow Morné Steyn to kick drops and penalties. If not, it could develop into a long, hard tour.”

The first Test in Durban takes place on Saturday June 9, followed by a Test in Johannesburg the following Saturday, June 16.

The third and final Test will be played in Port Elizabeth on Saturday June 23.

Two midweek games, against SA Barbarians South and SA Barbarians North will be played in Kimberley and Potchefstroom on Wednesday June 13 and Tuesday June 19, respectively. – Sapa
