We South Africans know nobody trolls a bunch of losers like our Minister of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula. But the USA just got introduced to his flavour of trash talking.

Yesterday, The Washington Post published an article capturing all the ways Mbalula heckled the US rugby team before, during and after they played the Springboks and lost.

The author, Marissa Payne, wrote: “Politicians aren’t known for their realness, at least in the United States. But things must work differently in South Africa because Fikile Mbalula… left nothing on the table when it came to expressing his glee on Twitter over the Springboks’ 64-0 shutout of the United States during their Rugby World Cup match on Wednesday.”

The report said that before the bout, Mbalula tweeted: “Today we play USA – they will know Africa is a continent and South Africa is a country in it – they will learn.”

The minister put up memes and symbols, and even included a recent picture of Jacob Zuma and Barack Obama where Zuma was on the phone.

He tweeted: “Pres Obama: who you callin? Pres Zuma: The Springboks, telling them to chow your Eagles.”

Payne further wrote: “Now, I know exactly what you’re thinking: ‘This can’t be real.’ But then you don’t know Mbalula. The man tells it like it is, whether he’s online or not, especially when it comes to rugby.”

Mbalula wasn’t fazed by The Washington Post report though, claiming everything he had tweeted was in jest.

“I don’t understand what Americans see as humour. They must just get along with our (South African) sense of humour,” he said.

“They are too sensitive, they can’t take a loss,” he added.

He also said The Washington Post had blown up something he deemed inconsequential “for no reason”. - The Star
