A former manager of South Africa's national football team, Phil Setshedi, was convicted for match fixing, the country's football association said Monday.
Setshedi, nicknamed “Mr Jones”, was convicted in a Cape Town court “after being found guilty of an attempt to unduly and improperly influence the outcome” in play-offs for promotion to the second tier, the South African Football Association (Safa) said in a statement.
“This is the first time the South African Football Association has secured such a historic conviction.”
Sentencing hearings will take place next year.
Setshedi was assistant coach to national team Bafana Bafana (The Boys) which won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations. – AFP
