Johannesburg – Kaizer Chiefs were pushed into extra-time by Black Leopards but walked away with a smash-and-grab 1-0 win in the opening round of the Nedbank Cup at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday.

Amakhosi survived a scare but eventually walked away winners as they began their defence of the country's most lucrative knockout competition.

Lidoda Duvha successfully negotiated their way past 90 minutes and the teams regrouped as the game headed into extra-time, only for Musona – who started on the bench – to come on and score the crucial goal that proved the difference in the end.

Fellow Premiership outfit AmaZulu, meanwhile, had no trouble in getting past National First Division (NFD) side United FC, claiming a 2-0 win at the Olympia Park Stadium in Rustenburg.

Mpho Mvelase and Bongani Ndulula netted either side of half-time as Usuthu eased past their lesser fancied opponents.

Elsewhere, an incredible 11 goals were scored as NFD side African Warriors beat Mainstay United 8-3 at the Mxolisi Bicky Jacob Stadium in Upington, in the Northern Cape.

Milano won 5-4 on penalties over Bloemfontein Young Tigers after the game ended 1-1 after 120 minutes, ensuring another NFD side will be represented in the next round, with the draw taking place later this week. – Sapa
