Johannesburg – In order to avoid inactivity, Wits coach Gavin Hunt said it was crucial his side advanced to the quarterfinal of the Telkom Knockout and maintain their momentum.

“It is important for us to try and play as much football as we can, because this team needs that with all the players we have,” Hunt said on Tuesday.

“If we get out of this competition early, then we are not going to play much in the weeks going forward. So it is important that we go through to the next round.”

Wits square-off against Moroka Swallows in the cup competition at the Bidvest Stadium on Friday.

The Clever Boys have the upper hand having defeated Swallows 3-0 in the Premiership at the end of August.

Despite Swallows' struggles in the league recently, Hunt feels coach Zeca Marques' charges would be difficult to beat this time.

“We beat them in the league, but that will not have any bearing on the game on Friday, with them having lost their last two games.”

Hunt expected Swallows Ä having lost their last three matches to Wits, Chippa United and Free State Stars, to come out guns blazing.

“It will take the pressure out of their league form playing in a cup game. The match can go either way.”

The former SuperSport United mentor said he aims to rotate his players in both the league and the competition.

“We have to try and give few people some game time. This Telkom Knockout and I aren't the best of friends.

“The trick is to get eight or nine players to gel together. And then try and move it from there.”

With Wits having netted 10 times in all competition this season, Hunt said he was confident his side would find their scoring boots later in the season.

“You can't judge it over a period of seven games. You should judge us over a longer period of time.

“If we can be more consistent in that regard, we will be good. We are getting there. Watch this space. We have a decent squad.”– Sapa
