Cape Town - The promotion playoff game between Santos and Chippa United at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday ended in a 0-0 draw.

Santos now have four points, Chippa have two, while Thanda Royal Zulu have one point.

The opening 15 minutes saw Santos enjoying more of the ball and spending more time in the opposition half.

Erwin Isaacs managed to get a shot on target after six minutes, but from a tight angle he was unable to beat goalkeeper Tashrique Goldman.

Chances also fell the way of Tyren Arendse, whose pile-driver was tipped over by Goldman, while Salmaan King was a metre wide from 35m.

Halfway through the stanza it was Chippa's chance for a go at goal, with Mfundo Shumana twice forcing Santos's giant shot stopper Pa Demba Touray to tip shots over the bar.

In the 37th minute Petrus Ngebo should have put the NFD side ahead, but failed to hit the target.

There was a similar miss for the PSL side a minute before the break when Bheki Shabangu headed across goal from only six metres out.

Three minutes after the break Shabangu was looking for a penalty claim when he went down under Shabangu's challenge, but referee Victor Gomes ruled he had taken a dive.

With 15 minutes to go the NFD side began to up their game, inspired by the introduction of playmaker Andile Mbenyane.

Mbenyane came close with a free kick, which saw Touray doing well to keep out, a minute later the same player missed by a yard or two with a 20m drive.

Santos were, however, always a threat on the counter, and when King played in Isaacs after 75 minutes, a goal looked to be on, but Goldman positioned himself well to make the save.

Isaacs also seemed destined to score 10 minutes from time when again he found himself through on goal, but Goldman made another fine save.

The same player was again close in the dying moments of the game when his shot from an angle struck the upright. - Sapa
