London – Liverpool are chasing Benfica’s Lorenzo Melgarejo to give cover at left back as manager Brendan Rodgers has only Jose Enrique and England Under 21 star Jack Robinson in that position. A deal for Valencia’s Aly Cissokho had been discussed but Rodgers has turned to Melgarejo, a Paraguay international, and Liverpool want to do a loan with a view to a permanent transfer.

Melgarejo would require a work permit to play in the Barclays Premier League but he has only one full international cap.

The 22-year-old has been linked with Arsenal and Fenerbahce this summer. Liverpool also need an attacking midfielder, having missed out on Henrikh Mkhitaryan, 24.

However, despite looking at Kyriakos Papadopoulos of Schalke for some while, Liverpool no longer have the need to sign a central defender after Kolo Toure, 32, made an impressive start to life at Anfield. Valencia are keen on Manchester United’s Javier Hernandez, 25, but they are likely to sign former Tottenham striker Helder Postiga, 30, from Real Zaragoza, who want Manchester United’s Angelo Henriquez, 19, on loan. – Daily Mail
