London – Chelsea captain John Terry signed a new one-year contract that keeps him at the Premier League club through the 2015-16 season.

The 34-year-old, whose current deal expires after this season, has made 661 appearances for the Blues since 1998 and scored a club-record 63 goals for a defender.

“This new contract is not to say 'thank you very much,'“ manager Jose Mourinho said on Chelsea's website. “It is because John continues to perform. He is a top defender. I am happy that he completely deserves this new contract after a season where he has already played 40 matches.”

Terry captured his 13th trophy this month when the Blues beat Tottenham in the League Cup final, his third victory in that competition.

He's also won the Champions League, Europa League, three Premier League titles and five FA Cups.

“I'm delighted to have signed an extension to my contract with Chelsea,” Terry said. “After adding another major trophy to my collection this month I hope myself, the players and manager can continue to bring success to our club.”

Terry played 78 times for England over nine seasons, including at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, scoring six goals. – Sapa-dpa
