The new Manchester United away kit – black shorts and a white jersey, sporting a black and white club badge – was launched at an exclusive event in the city on Friday.

The launch, at the Castle of Good Hope, was attended by some top members of the SA branches of the Manchester United Supporters’ Club and coincided with the Red Devils’ visit to Cape Town.

The team plays Ajax Cape Town at Cape Town stadium at 3pm on Saturday.

Veteran Rio Ferdinand, Federico Macheda and Antonio Valencia modelled the new kit before giving media interviews.

Ferdinand said he was pleased with the new kit.

“I like it a lot. It’s lighter and looks good.

“To quote the old cliché: ‘If you feel good, you play good’, and we plan to play very well this season.”

He said Saturday’s game would be perfect preparation.

“The boys here are quick and very similar to the players of the Premier League, so it’s the perfect way to get ready for a new season and also give our fans here a chance to see us play live.

“Ajax Cape Town are sure to give us a run for our money, too,” said Ferdinand.

Nike described the club’s new strips as environment friendly because each shirt is made up from 13 recycled plastic water bottles.

The manufacturing process reduces energy consumption up to 30 percent when compared with traditional polyester.

The red home kit, launched previously, also reflects the history of the city of Manchester and features gingham check that hails from the city’s famous cotton mills, which gave birth to its nickname of Cottonopolis.

Supporters’ demands for replicas of both kits have been boosted by the team’s visit to Durban and Cape Town.

Fernando Ventura, marketing director of the Foschini group, which includes clothing outlets such as Totalsports, said they had received a substantial number of pre-orders.

Myles Reagon of, the Cape Town branch of the Manchester United Supporters’ Club, was excited to be at the launch and see his favourite players.

“We got to see the unveiling of our awesome new kit and meet some of our top players. It’s a chance that only comes once in a lifetime.”
