Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been told he can break the club’s £42million transfer record to sign a world-class striker.

Director Lord Harris has revealed the club have more than £200m in the bank and that Wenger has targeted the man he wants, with Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema (right) top of his wish list.

Lord Harris said: ‘We would back Arsene to break the club’s transfer record (Mesut Ozil). If he wanted the man, he could have him. Apart from Lionel Messi and Ronaldo, he could have any player. We will probably have to break the club record to get the man he wants.’

The carpet tycoon revealed that Wenger’s top target is keen to move to the Premier League. ‘We get a list of the players that Wenger wants,’ he said. ‘On the list is a centre forward. I think he wants to come but it’s down to whether the other team can find a superstar to replace him.’

Sportsmail understands Arsenal have had an initial enquiry for 27-year-old Benzema rebuffed by Real but will make another approach soon. – Daily Mail
