Durban – First-half goals from Lerato Lamola and Frank Mhango set Bloemfontein Celtic on their way to a first win of the Premiership season as they eased AmaZulu 2-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Wednesday.
Striker Lamola capitalised on a poor back pass from Marc van Heerden to open the scoring after 17 minutes, before fellow-frontman Frank Mhango lashed in a second 10 minutes later to send Siwelele into the top eight.
Meanwhile, Usuthu dropped to the bottom of the table without a victory from their opening four games.
The match was a cagey affair early on, disrupted several times as players seemed to easily go to ground.
It was hardly a surprise when the first chance came from a miscued clearance by Musa Bilankulu, but there was still plenty to do for Goodman Dlamini, whose shot was straight at Patrick Tignyemb.
There was an even bigger error to follow at the other end when Celtic took the lead after 17 minutes.
A poor attempted back pass by Van Heerden was easily intercepted by Lamola, who rounded the helpless Tapuwa Kapini and rolled the ball into an empty net.
The lead was doubled 10 minutes later after more lackadaisical play in the Usuthu midfield saw Musa Nyatama intercept the ball and play in Mhango with the Malawian unleashing a powerful finish from inside the box.
AmaZulu finally managed to conjure up a decent response after 37 minutes when Khulekani Madondo slipped in Bongani Ndulula.
His stinging low effort from inside the box forced Tignyemb to palm away with the rebound shot from Philani Shange comfortably caught by the Cameroonian.
It remained 2-0 at the break, and 20 minutes into the second half it should have been 3-0 when Sadate Ouro-Akoriko and Carlington Nyadombo seemed to get into each others' way.
Usuthu coach Craig Rosslee then threw on new striker Bornwell Mwape for his debut, but the Zambian failed to take his first chance – a free shot from the left after he was played in by Van Heerden as Tignyemb easily saved.
Mogorosi had another good chance before the end when he curled over, but it mattered little as Ernst Middendorp's men eased to victory. – Sapa
