Johannesburg – Kaizer Chiefs will need to wait a few more days before they can focus on the Nedbank Cup final, according to AmaKhosi captain Itumeleng Khune.
Chiefs drew 1-1 against SuperSport United in Polokwane on Wednesday, bagging a crucial point to secure the Absa Premiership title for the first time in eight years.
The Glamour Boys face University of Pretoria in their final league match of the season in Nelspruit on Saturday.
They square up against SuperSport again in next week's cup final.
“It is important to end the season on a high note... we have to fight for three points on Saturday before we can start thinking about the Nedbank Cup final,” Khune said on the Chiefs website on Thursday.
Assistant coach Doctor Khumalo said there was no time for celebrations.
“The coach told the players that they would only rest after the Nedbank Cup final on May 26... for now we have to keep our eyes on the ball,” he said.
Khumalo took charge of Chiefs in their midweek clash, with head coach Stuart Baxter banished to the stands due to a two-match suspension.
With Baxter having lifted the Soweto giants this season after a year at the helm, Khumalo praised the efforts of the former Bafana Bafana mentor.
“People did not give him a chance when he came here back in May (2012),” Khumalo said.
“They questioned his CV, but the club knew exactly what they wanted to achieve.
“The coach brought new ideas and made the players believe in themselves.
“He also made the players realise the importance of donning the gold and black.”
Khumalo, 45, won three league titles with Chiefs as a player, and he was delighted to add an accolade as a coach.
