Johannesburg - Jomo Cosmos were relegated from the Premiership after drawing 2-2 with Black Leopards in Daveyton on Wednesday night.

Returning Leopards' captain Mongezi Bobe sunk the home team's hopes with a quick brace in the 72nd minute, and another in the 76th minute.

A late fightback from Cosmos saw them net twice through substitute Tshidiso Tukane after 84 minutes and Matthew Rusike just three minutes later to earn the draw.

A victory for Leopards (27 points) would have seen them retain their top flight status for the new season, but the draw means they have to wait until the weekend to confirm their status.

Bottom-placed Cosmos, who have 20 points from just two wins and 24 goals during their campaign, automatically return to the First Division after one season.

With a final round of league matches to be played on Saturday, either Leopards or 15th-placed Santos (24 points) will be in the play-offs and face two promotion hopefuls next month.

Santos will meet Cosmos in their last fixture, while Leopards face Ajax Cape Town.

Cosmos' third relegation from top flight soccer is a record in the Premier Soccer League era.

While their survival chances were slim heading into the fixture, since they would only have been fighting for a play-off spot, Ezenkosi started off with gusto as they dominated proceedings.

Livewire midfielder Katlego Loke rattled the crossbar after nine minutes before Rusike ballooned a shot from outside the box moments later.

Bobe momentarily brought Leopards into the first half with two speculative attempts that went wide.

Cosmos remained superior though as Alois Ngwerere fashioned a chance which sailed wide of Azwindini Maphaha's goal.

The hosts again dominated proceedings at the start of the second half despite lacking penetration.

They should have been awarded a penalty near the hour mark but a handball on the line was not spotted by referee Robert Sithole.

Lidoda Duvha's Humphrey Khoza made a last ditch effort to prevent a definite Rusike goal from a shot inside the box with Maphaha beaten.

Leopards took advantage of their fortune that started with striker Kingston Nkhatha's long range shot which went narrowly wide of goal.

Then Bobe struck twice in the space of three minutes as he easily sliced through a poor Cosmos central defence.

Ezenkosi scrambled two goals back in the dying moments.

The damage had been completed nine minutes earlier because of the side's characteristic concentration lapses at the back.

Rusike, with an outstretched leg during injury time, missed a cross from Tukane on the left flank which was their last chance in their battle to stay in the PSL. - Sapa
