Johannesburg – Mamelodi Sundowns midfield maestro Teko Modise says his team are prepared to play possum for now and later pounce on a slip by log-leaders Kaizer Chiefs.
“We're just waiting for Chiefs to drop points, but at the same time we need to focus on ourselves, we need to do better,” Modise said after Sundowns's 3-0 demolition of Polokwane City on Sunday.
“All teams compete and we need to win games. They (Chiefs) have been winning games and doing well. They won the first quarter without losing so we need to start winning as well.”
Against City at Peter Mokaba Stadium, a first half strike by forward Cuthbert Malajila and second half goals from midfielders Themba Zwane and Modise handed the defending league champions their fourth victory of the season.
The Chloorkop outfit, with 13 points from seven games, are eight points adrift of early pace-setters, Amakhosi.
The away result completed a hat-trick of victories in the league for the club and the first time they had scored more than two goals in a match.
Should Sundowns catch their Soweto rivals, it would be a case of deja vu as Chiefs relinquished a nine point lead and the title to the Brazilians during the home stretch last season.
This season, prior to the string of positive results, Sundowns had a tumultuous start to the season which culminated in a 3-0
humiliation at the hands of rivals Orlando Pirates.
Modise believed the result against City was proof that the team had overcome the slump and their hard work was beginning to pay off.
“We work hard as a team so when it comes to the game we implement what we do in training. We knew that in the second half the game was going to open and it started opening up then we started scoring goals.”
The victory took their tally to nine goals in seven league games.
“It’s all about taking each game as it comes and we want to play better and improve. We hope in our next game we also continue scoring goals.”
City, meanwhile, are waiting for Kosta Papic to finalise his work permit before officially taking charge of the team. The Limpopo outfit earlier in the month fired coach Boebie Solomons after a string of poor results. – Sapa
